BMW is giving North American driving enthusiasts something rare in the modern performance car world: a special edition M3 CS with a six speed manual transmission. The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter, with Handschalter translating roughly from German as hand shift, combines serious CS performance upgrades with the traditional engagement of a manual gearbox.

According to MotorTrend, the model will be sold exclusively in North America and marks the first time an M3 CS has been offered with a manual transmission. The car blends hardware from several BMW M models, creating a package aimed at drivers who still want a more connected and involved driving experience instead of relying only on automatic speed.

Power comes from a 3.0 litre twin turbo inline six engine producing 473 horsepower and 406 pound feet of torque. That output is sent to the rear wheels through a six speed manual transmission and an electronic limited slip rear differential. BMW says the more powerful 550 horsepower version of the engine was not used because the manual gearbox cannot handle that higher output.

Even with the lower power figure compared with some other M models, the M3 CS Handschalter is expected to be quick. BMW estimates a zero to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds with rollout, or 4.1 seconds without rollout. That places it behind the all wheel drive M3 Competition in straight line performance, but the focus here is clearly on driver involvement, balance, and exclusivity.

The car also borrows several key pieces from BMW’s CS and CSL lineup. It receives weight saving carbon fibre parts, including the roof, splitter, trunk, seatbacks, and centre console. It also uses the M4 CSL’s engine mounts, the M3 CS titanium exhaust system and dampers, and springs from the M2 CS.

BMW has also given the M3 CS Handschalter its own suspension tuning. Because the car does not use an all wheel drive system, engineers were able to lower the suspension slightly, reducing the centre of gravity and sharpening the car’s handling. The model also receives unique camber settings, special tuning for the adaptive suspension, and a dedicated rear differential setup.

Optional upgrades will include carbon ceramic brakes, a front strut brace, track focused tires, a head up display, and a power trunk lid. MotorTrend reported that during a passenger ride at Willow Springs, the car felt balanced, responsive, and eager to change direction, while the manual gearbox appeared to use longer gear ratios typical of modern BMW M cars.

Pricing for the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter starts at $108,450, and production will be limited to fewer than 1,000 units. The car will be built in Germany, with the first examples expected to arrive at dealerships in the United States and Canada by fall.

For enthusiasts following performance car news on https://www.weeklyvoice.com, the M3 CS Handschalter stands out as a rare modern sports sedan built for drivers who still value the skill and satisfaction of shifting for themselves. At a time when manual transmissions are disappearing, BMW’s decision to reserve this special M3 for North America shows just how important the region’s enthusiast market remains.
