Nissan may be preparing to take the Pathfinder back to its roots. A new industry report suggests that by 2029, the Pathfinder nameplate could expand to include a body-on-frame version built on the same platform as the upcoming Nissan Xterra. If accurate, this would mark a major shift for the SUV while keeping the current unibody Pathfinder in production at the same time.

The idea of selling two different Pathfinders simultaneously is not without precedent. In 2004, Nissan offered both a traditional midsize Pathfinder and a larger model known as the Pathfinder Armada. That larger SUV eventually became the standalone Nissan Armada, separating itself from the Pathfinder name entirely. The proposed 2029 strategy appears similar, except the distinction would be between a unibody crossover-style Pathfinder and a more rugged body-on-frame version designed for serious off-road capability.

According to reports, the body-on-frame Pathfinder would carry a tougher visual identity and likely wear the Pro4X badge, signaling its off-road intentions. This version is expected to offer a traditional internal combustion engine at launch, followed by a hybrid variant later in its lifecycle. Production for both the new Pathfinder variant and the revived Xterra is reportedly planned for Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi facility, reinforcing the company’s renewed focus on frame-based utility vehicles.

Meanwhile, the current unibody Pathfinder would continue to serve buyers seeking a more road-focused family SUV. Positioned at a lower price point than the rugged body-on-frame model, it would likely remain the more affordable option in the lineup. However, history suggests this dual-path strategy may not last indefinitely. If sales shift heavily toward the tougher variant, Nissan could eventually rename or phase out the unibody version, similar to how the Armada separated from the Pathfinder branding in the mid-2000s.

When approached for confirmation, Nissan declined to verify the existence of a body-on-frame Pathfinder program. A company spokesperson stated that product decisions are continually evaluated based on consumer trends and market opportunities. While the automaker expressed excitement about the return of the Xterra and additional frame-based vehicles on a new platform, it emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding other future products. For now, the possibility of a tougher Pathfinder remains speculative but increasingly plausible as Nissan doubles down on its off-road SUV heritage.
