Authentic Sri Lankan Dhal Curry Recipe

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 cup red lentils (masoor dhal), washed
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1-inch piece ginger, minced
    • 1 tomato, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon curry powder
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 2 cloves
    • 2 cardamom pods
    • 1 sprig curry leaves
    • Salt to taste
    • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Instructions:
    1. Cook lentils in water until soft, then mash lightly.
    2. In a separate pan, heat oil and add onions, garlic, ginger, and curry leaves. Sauté until onions are translucent.
    3. Add tomatoes and cook until soft.
    4. Add turmeric powder, chili powder, curry powder, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Cook for a minute.
    5. Add mashed lentils, salt, and enough water to achieve the desired consistency. Simmer for a few minutes.
    6. Adjust seasoning if needed and serve hot with rice or bread.
