Canadians earned an average of $1,253 per week in June 2024, a figure consistent with previous months and representing a four percent increase compared to the same time last year, according to a report from Statistics Canada. The report highlighted that the average weekly earnings were significantly influenced by various sectors, with employees in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction earning the highest average wages at $2,265.69 per week.
While the report provides insight into average earnings, it does not include data on median earnings, which can offer a different perspective by reducing the impact of outliers. Canadians worked an average of 33.5 hours per week, a slight increase year-over-year.
The labor market showed signs of strain, with 2.6 unemployed individuals for each vacant position, marking the fifth consecutive month of this widening ratio. Some sectors, such as information and cultural industries, saw a substantial increase in vacancies, while others like accommodation and food services experienced a decrease. Despite these shifts, the overall vacancy rate remained unchanged from May.
