The City of Brampton is set to expand its winter recreation offerings with the grand opening of two new NHL-sized outdoor rinks at Sandalwood Park on February 14. The Valentine’s Day celebration will run from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and is expected to draw families, young athletes and hockey fans from across the city.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown will headline the event alongside former Toronto Maple Leafs forward and Stanley Cup champion Gary Roberts. Also in attendance will be Maggie Connors of the Toronto Sceptres. Both players are scheduled to meet fans and sign autographs during the opening festivities, giving young hockey enthusiasts a chance to connect with professional athletes.

Construction on the rinks began in the summer of 2025. The facilities feature weather resistant high density polyethylene boards with acrylic glass, protective safety netting and NHL standard goals. LED floodlights allow for evening skating, while a scoreboard, player benches and rink divider curtains create additional practice space. The design supports both recreational skating and competitive skill development.

Located at 130 Conestoga Drive, Sandalwood Park already offers tennis courts that were recently adapted for pickleball. During the warmer months, the new rinks will transition to accommodate ball hockey and other community sports, ensuring year round use of the space.

City officials describe the project as more than a sports upgrade. The rinks are expected to function as a community gathering place, hosting events and tournaments while strengthening Brampton’s reputation for investing in accessible recreation. The facilities will also support the city’s Youth Sport Development Program led by former professional player Phil Oreskovic. The free program provides drop in hockey instruction for children aged four to 15, focusing on skating, passing, shooting and teamwork.

With professional grade amenities and expanded programming opportunities, the new rinks are designed to give Brampton residents of all ages a safe and inclusive environment to stay active throughout the winter season.
