Buyers hoping for a sub 30,000 dollar Nissan Leaf will need to keep waiting. Nissan has confirmed that the more affordable Leaf S variant will not be arriving for the 2026 model year, and its future remains uncertain. The decision effectively delays what was expected to be the brand’s lowest priced electric vehicle offering in North America.

The 2026 Leaf currently launches with the S Plus trim, which carries a starting price of 31,485 dollars. While still competitive within the entry level EV segment, it falls just above the psychologically important 30,000 dollar mark. The now delayed Leaf S was expected to feature a smaller battery pack and a price comfortably below that threshold, potentially broadening Nissan’s reach among budget conscious buyers.

Nissan confirmed the delay in a statement, explaining that it regularly evaluates market trends, customer preferences, and the broader electric vehicle landscape when allocating resources. As part of that review, the company decided not to introduce the smaller battery version of the 2026 Leaf in the United States and Canada this year. Nissan added that it remains committed to delivering products aligned with buyer demand and will continue assessing future battery configurations based on evolving market needs.

The automaker did not provide further details regarding the reasoning behind the postponement. Questions remain about whether factors such as customer demand, supplier considerations, shifting trade policies, or changes in environmental regulations played a role. Nissan also declined to confirm whether the Leaf S could appear for the 2027 model year.

For now, the S Plus remains Nissan’s entry point into the EV market. Alongside competitors such as the anticipated 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, it continues to represent one of the most affordable electric options available. However, without the sub 30,000 dollar Leaf S, buyers seeking the absolute lowest priced new EV may find their choices more limited in the near term.
