As the Canadian flag celebrates its 60th anniversary, national pride is at an all-time high, fueled in part by U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent antagonistic rhetoric toward Canada. In response, Canadians are rallying around their national symbol like never before, with flag sales surging across the country.
In Saskatoon, The Flag Shop has seen an unprecedented demand for Canadian flags, with owner Judy Denham noting that sales this week have outpaced their usual weekly numbers. She attributes the surge to a renewed sense of patriotism, as Canadians reaffirm their national identity. “People want to show that we are true Canadians and that we plan to stay that way,” Denham said.
The movement has been further amplified by a joint letter from all five living Canadian prime ministers, urging citizens to fly the Maple Leaf with pride. Many Canadians, like Robert Wawryk, are responding enthusiastically. Wawryk insists on purchasing only Canadian-made products and believes the flag is a powerful statement of sovereignty. “We’re a sovereign nation, and nobody is going to take us over,” he said, emphasizing the unity he sees among Canadians in the face of external pressures.
Others, like Karen Clothier, are taking part in the movement regardless of political affiliation. “Canada is Canada, and we’re Canadian people,” she stated, underscoring the widespread sentiment that national identity transcends politics.
As the nation marks this milestone, Canadians are displaying their pride in defiance of external challenges, reinforcing their commitment to unity, resilience, and the enduring symbol of the Maple Leaf.
