Canada Post has begun early steps toward ending most remaining door to door mail delivery across the country, launching a multi year transition that will move millions of households to community mailboxes. According to The Canadian Press, the Crown corporation confirmed the work is underway following discussions with union representatives about how the changes will be introduced.

The organization said roughly four million addresses will eventually be converted from traditional home delivery to centralized community mailbox service. The rollout is expected to take approximately five years, with different regions scheduled to transition in stages as planning continues across the country.

As part of the first phase, Canada Post has opened consultations with 13 communities, including Ottawa and Winnipeg. The corporation expects about 136,000 addresses in those areas to shift from door to door service to community mailboxes beginning in late 2026 and continuing into early 2027.

Canada Post also confirmed it is reviewing its retail network as part of a broader restructuring effort. The review could result in the closure of some urban and suburban post offices located in areas the corporation believes currently have more locations than required to support demand.

The changes follow a federal decision last year to lift a long standing moratorium on rural post office closures. That move raised concerns among some residents and community leaders who worry that reduced postal infrastructure could affect service levels in remote regions where private courier options remain limited, according to The Canadian Press.

The modernization plan represents one of the most significant adjustments to Canada’s mail delivery system in decades and reflects ongoing efforts to adapt postal operations to changing communication habits and declining traditional letter volumes.
