The Canadian government is introducing new measures to simplify the process of obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for newcomers, including the launch of SIN@Entry, an integrated program set to roll out in 2025-2026.

What Is SIN@Entry?

SIN@Entry will allow applicants for work permits and permanent residence to request and receive their SIN directly through their IRCC secure account, eliminating the need for a separate application. This streamlined process, introduced by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is expected to reduce in-person visits to Service Canada locations by up to 50%, easing wait times for other essential services.

How Is SIN@Entry Different from SIN@Landing?

While SIN@Landing already enables newcomers to obtain their SIN upon arrival at select Canadian airports, SIN@Entry will integrate SIN issuance into the immigration application process When clients apply to IRCC for an immigration stream which entitles them to a SIN, such as a work permit or permanent residence, they will have the option to request a SIN and view their SIN Confirmation Letter through their IRCC secure account in a streamlined, single-window process. This integration will allow clients to request and receive their SIN as part of their interaction with IRCC, eliminating the need to apply separately for their SIN.

SIN@Landing is currently available at the following airports:

  • Toronto Pearson International Airport
  • Montréal Trudeau International Airport
  • Vancouver International Airport
  • Halifax Stanfield International Airport
  • Calgary International Airport
  • Edmonton International Airport

Since these airport Service Canada centres are not open 24/7, newcomers who arrive outside business hours can still apply for a SIN online or at Service Canada locations later.

Enhanced eSIN Automation Coming in 2025

The government is also improving Canada’s eSIN Automation system to speed up online applications. By September 2025, a new technology-powered eSIN system will reduce SIN processing time to just minutes—a significant improvement from the current five business days for online applications.

Additionally, starting May 2025, digital SIN confirmation letters will be available as PDFs through My Service Canada Account (MSCA), reducing reliance on paper mail and offering greater security.

Who Needs a SIN?

A Social Insurance Number is required for:
Temporary residents, permanent residents, and Canadian citizens working in Canada
International students planning to work part-time (if permitted by their study permit)
Anyone accessing government programs and benefits

How Can Newcomers Currently Apply for a SIN?

1️⃣ In person at a Service Canada location – Same-day issuance
2️⃣ Online via eSIN  – Takes five business days
3️⃣ By mail – Takes up to 20 business days

These new measures are expected to modernize and simplify the SIN process, ensuring newcomers can integrate into the workforce more efficiently and with less administrative burden.
