In the wake of Pope Francis’s death at the age of 88, Canada’s Catholic community is gathering to honour the late pontiff with solemn tributes and memorial services. Votive candles flickered throughout St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica in Toronto on Monday, as news of the Pope’s passing—due to stroke and heart failure—marked the end of an era for the global Catholic Church.
Cardinal Frank Leo, the Archbishop of Toronto and Canada’s newest cardinal, will lead a special mass this afternoon at St. Michael’s Cathedral for the repose of Pope Francis’s soul. Leo, who was appointed cardinal by Francis just last December, will also lead an evening prayer service and address the media following the mass.
Meanwhile, in Montreal, Archbishop Christian Lépine is set to preside over a requiem mass at the Mary Queen of the World Cathedral, followed by a candlelight vigil. Both ceremonies will be livestreamed on YouTube, allowing faithful across Canada and around the world to join in mourning and reflection.
Pope Francis, known for his humility, progressive stance on social issues, and efforts to modernize the Church, passed away shortly after Holy Week. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
As Catholic communities across Canada grieve the loss of a transformative spiritual leader, today’s masses in Toronto and Montreal offer a moment of unity, reverence, and remembrance for the man who reshaped the modern papacy.
