The Department of National Defence (DND) has confirmed that the Canadian Armed Forces are tracking a fleet of Russian warships that reached Cuban waters on Wednesday. This fleet includes a nuclear-powered submarine, an oil tanker, and a rescue tug, arriving in Havana Bay ahead of scheduled military exercises in the Caribbean.
The DND spokesperson stated that the Canadian Armed Forces, in collaboration with U.S. counterparts, routinely conduct maritime and air operations to support continental defense. The Royal Canadian Air Force’s CP-140 Aurora aircraft and HMCS Ville de Quebec have been specifically monitoring the activities of the Russian flotilla.
This move comes as part of the Canadian Armed Forces’ mandate to routinely monitor the approaches to North America, ensuring the defense of the continent. The longstanding relationship between Russia and Cuba dates back to the Cuban revolution in the late 1950s, maintaining close ties ever since.
