Beginning May 1, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will expand eligibility to more adults as part of the federal government’s effort to make dental care more affordable for Canadians without private insurance. The phased rollout means that adults aged 55 to 64 can start applying on May 1, followed by those aged 18 to 34 on May 15, and those aged 35 to 54 on May 29. Applications for seniors, adults with a disability tax credit, and children under 18 have already been accepted for coverage ending June 30, 2025.
The CDCP, introduced through the 2023 federal budget, is available to Canadian residents whose adjusted family net income is under $90,000 and who have no access to private dental insurance. So far, over 3.4 million Canadians have been approved to join the plan, and nearly 1.7 million have already received care. The program includes about 25,000 participating oral health providers, such as dentists, hygienists, specialists, denturists, and accredited dental schools.
To qualify for the CDCP, applicants must meet four criteria: no access to dental insurance, filing of Canadian income tax returns for the previous year, an adjusted family net income below $90,000, and residency in Canada for tax purposes. Those who receive dental benefits through other government programs can still apply, with benefits coordinated between programs. Canadians can check the progress of their application through the Canadian Dental Care Plan Status Checker online tool.
The CDCP covers a broad range of services, including diagnostic exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, crowns, dentures, extractions, and sedation services. Orthodontic services will be added to the coverage list in 2025. Coverage ranges from 40% to 100% of the CDCP’s established fees depending on income level, with those earning under $70,000 receiving full coverage. Patients are encouraged to ask oral health providers upfront about any costs not covered by the plan.
Canadians already enrolled in the CDCP can renew their coverage for the 2025–2026 period after filing their 2024 income tax returns and receiving their Notice of Assessment (NOA). Renewal is completed through the CDCP’s online portal using the client number provided on the member card or renewal letter.
