Toronto: Canadian Newa Guthi recently celebrated New Year Nepal Sambat 1142 along with a talk program on “Mha Puja” the cultural journey of self worshiping.
Inaugurating the program, Guthi’s President Prakash Pradhan wished peace, progress and prosperity to all community members.
Delivering the welcome speech, General Secretary Bimal Shrestha opined the need of collaborating with the Canadian mainstream to promote and preserve Newah culture. Ms. Ranjana Sainju and Mr. Amar Sainju duo performed on the Sitar and Murchunga (Jewish harp) and rendered some festival songs.
Exchanging greetings, Treasurer Sharan Shrestha, Dr. Krishan Kayastha, social activist Jyoti Vaidya and Laxman Muni Shrestha highlighted the importance of observing Nepal Sambat New Year 1142 and Mha Puja while Dr. Prajwal Pradhan presented visually on the procedure of Mha Puja and New Year celebration in Canada and other countries.
Delivering a speech on Nepal Sambat, Guthi’s Vice President Uttam Makaju explained the legacy of Nepal Sambat being connected with peoples’ welfare and the unique era being named after the nation.
Elucidating on the social and cultural facets of the “Mha Puja”, Mr Makaju termed it as a philosophy to know yourself to run your life and to serve the community.
“Every aspect of Newah culture is associated with scientific facts which should be explained to the upcoming generation to keep the culture and heritage going”, Mr. Makaju added.
After the formal program, guests were entertained with songs and instrumental music. At the end of the program Guthi’s Secretary Suman Rajbanshi thanked all the participants where as Public Relation Coordinator Ms. Meele Rajbhandari threw light on the program before starting. The program was organized virtually through Zoom because of the global pandemic.
