A chance encounter between Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai and Donald Trump Jr. has led Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders to hire Washington lobbying firm Checkmate Government Relations LLC for $85,000 USD a month to help prevent a looming trade war with the United States.

The decision came after a critical meeting at an airport hotel in Mississauga, where premiers discussed the growing tariff threats from President Donald Trump following Chrystia Freeland’s unexpected resignation from cabinet. Recognizing the urgency, Pillai reached out to Trump Jr., whom he had met previously, and was invited to a gathering in North Carolina, where he connected with lobbyist Charles F. McDowell IV, a close associate of the younger Trump.

Pillai recommended McDowell to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, chair of the Council of the Federation, who was exploring ways to secure key meetings in Washington. The lobbying contract, now public through U.S. disclosure laws, aims to facilitate discussions with U.S. officials, though it makes no promises on outcomes.

The premiers’ visit secured last-minute meetings with senior White House officials, though Trump continued his harsh rhetoric on Canada’s trade practices and defense spending. Despite Trump’s repeated remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state, Pillai and other premiers remain focused on preventing tariffs that could impact Canadian industries, emphasizing that their lobbying efforts are crucial in navigating this challenging political landscape.
