Travelers at Toronto Pearson International Airport experienced significant disruptions Thursday morning after a fatal police-involved shooting forced authorities to temporarily close parts of Terminal 1. The incident, occurring just before 7 a.m., involved three officers who opened fire on a 30-year-old man reportedly brandishing a handgun. Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has since assumed control of the investigation.

According to the SIU, the confrontation unfolded at the departures level outside Terminal 1, causing immediate chaos at Canada’s busiest airport. Though none of the officers involved sustained injuries, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities emphasized this as an isolated incident, reassuring the public that there is no further threat.

The disruption came during one of Pearson’s busiest periods, causing significant logistical challenges. Former Toronto police homicide detective Mark Mendelson described the event as a “logistical nightmare,” highlighting the volume of flights—including many to the U.S. and the Caribbean—scheduled around the time of the incident, affecting potentially over 100,000 travelers.

While flights experienced brief early-morning delays, operations largely returned to normal by late morning. Initially, travelers were rerouted through arrivals at Terminal 1 due to the investigation. Pearson Airport advised passengers via social media that alternative parking was available at Terminal 3 or the Viscount Station Kiss and Fly lot, with transit connections provided by the airport’s train system.

Public transit routes were briefly altered due to the investigation, with TTC buses redirected to Terminal 3 before resuming normal operations later in the morning. Although normal activity is largely restored, airport authorities have not yet specified when the affected area of Terminal 1 will fully reopen.
