BRAMPTON, ON (September 18, 2023) – From September 18 to 22, the City of Brampton is recognizing Pollution Prevention Week and reminding residents, visitors and businesses of the importance of protecting the natural environment.

Pollution Prevention Week is an annual campaign aimed at raising awareness of everyday actions that can be taken to reduce and prevent pollutants from entering the environment.

This year, Brampton will shed light on the importance of pollution prevention with a focus on litter reduction and raising awareness about Brampton’s stormwater drainage system. Stormwater is rain and melted snow that flows from streets into the City’s stormwater drainage system and ultimately into the environment. Stormwater picks up pollution as it runs over the ground, such as pet waste, fertilizer, pesticides, road salt, motor oil and automotive fluids, and litter. Reducing litter and safely disposing of hazardous materials helps prevent pollutants from entering the stormwater drainage system.

Top five pollution prevention actions:

  1. Keep your property clean and free of litter or join or host a local Parks Cleanup event.
  2. Pick up after your pet and dispose of pet waste properly.
  3. Be mindful of road salt use. Shovel snow and chip away ice before applying salt.
  4. Reduce or eliminate the use of fertilizers and pesticides/herbicides.
  5. Dispose of household hazardous materials such as motor oil, antifreeze, and paints at Region of Peel’s Community Recycling Centres.
