Canadian National Railway is investigating a train collision that occurred on Sunday morning near Edson, Alberta, after two freight trains reportedly sideswiped each other. The incident happened roughly 200 kilometres west of Edmonton and resulted in the derailment of several rail cars.
According to a statement provided by CN spokesperson Ashley Michnowski, the collision took place at low speed and involved rail cars carrying grain. She confirmed that there were no fires or hazardous materials involved in the accident. However, the affected section of the railway remains closed as the investigation continues.
Michnowski did not clarify whether the two trains were moving in the same or opposite directions at the time of the collision, and no further comment was available at the time of publication.
RCMP Cpl. Mathew Howell told The Canadian Press that one of the trains was transporting grain while the other was carrying batteries. He confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the derailment.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has deployed a team of investigators to the scene to assess the cause and circumstances surrounding the collision. Cleanup and rail service restoration efforts will proceed as the investigation unfolds.
