Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer is calling for answers on how two men with alleged connections to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) managed to immigrate to Canada and gain citizenship. Scheer is urging the House of Commons to reconvene its public safety committee to investigate the matter, seeking support from the Bloc Québécois and NDP.
Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi, 62, and his son, Mostafa Eldidi, 26, were arrested in Richmond Hill, Ontario, on July 28. They face nine terrorism-related charges, including conspiracy to commit murder for ISIS and aggravated assault outside Canada. Both men have denied the charges but have not entered formal pleas.
Scheer criticized the federal government’s handling of the situation, labeling it a “colossal failure of Trudeau’s national security system.” He insists that Canadians deserve to know how the Eldidis bypassed the screening process and whether there are others with similar backgrounds in the country.
Conservative MP and public safety critic Frank Caputo has written to Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, demanding the release of all details related to the alleged terrorist plot. Scheer has indicated that LeBlanc would be the first witness called to testify before the committee.
The federal government has yet to provide a detailed response to these demands.
