Delhi Gymkhana Club has sought an urgent meeting with the Central government after being asked to vacate its historic Lutyens’ Delhi premises by June 5, according to News18. The development has raised major concern among members of one of the capital’s oldest and most exclusive clubs.
The notice was issued by the Land and Development Office of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. According to News18, the government has stated that the twenty seven point three acre property is required for strengthening and securing defence infrastructure.
In a communication to its members, the club confirmed that it had received a formal request from the Centre seeking resumption of the premises. The club said its governing body met urgently after the development and decided to send an immediate response to the Land and Development Office seeking clarity on several matters affecting members, staff, and the club’s continued functioning.
The club has also indicated that its immediate focus is to avoid disruption to daily operations. The possible vacancy of the property could have major implications for members, employees, and the legacy of the institution, which has long been associated with Delhi’s elite social and sporting circles.
A club member named Siddharth told PTI that the club plans to appeal against the order. He said the institution is very old, has many members, and that the matter should be decided on merit if it reaches court.
The issue is now expected to move into a legal and administrative phase as the club seeks a meeting with officials and considers its next steps. The government’s stated need for the land for defence related infrastructure has added further importance to the matter, while members are looking for answers on whether the club can continue operating from the premises.
