A dramatic crash at a Mississauga plaza Sunday afternoon left several vehicles damaged and two people with minor injuries after a driver accelerated through a drive-thru and collided with a bank building.
The incident occurred around 2:42 p.m. at Westwood Shopping Centre near Goreway and Morning Star drives in Malton. Peel Regional Police say the driver of a Mazda CX-5 was in a Tim Hortons drive-thru when the vehicle suddenly sped forward, striking multiple vehicles before crashing into the front entrance of a nearby RBC bank.
Const. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters that the motorist, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to hospital as a precaution. A bystander inside another vehicle was also hurt but received treatment at the scene. Emergency crews remained on site into the evening, carefully working to assess and eventually remove the embedded SUV without compromising the structural integrity of the bank.
“At this point, the leading theory is that the driver may have suffered a medical episode,” said Bell-Morena, adding that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the shopping plaza and are asking any witnesses or drivers with dashcam video to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services responded with several units and said a structural inspection may be needed, although it remains unclear whether there is any significant building damage at this stage.
Authorities are asking people to steer clear of the area for now, warning of potential traffic delays while crews continue their work.
