Dunkin’ is preparing for a major return to Canada, with plans to open hundreds of locations across the country under a new franchise agreement.

According to The Canadian Press, Canadian restaurant operator Foodtastic has signed a master franchising deal with Inspire Brands, the company that owns Dunkin’. The agreement will bring the American coffee and donut chain back into the Canadian market after several years away.

Foodtastic, which already operates brands such as Second Cup, Milestones and Freshii in Canada, is expected to lead the expansion. The company says the first new Dunkin’ location could open in late 2026 or early 2027.

The move marks a significant comeback for Dunkin’, which once operated hundreds of stores in Canada before leaving the market in 2018. Its departure followed a legal battle in Quebec, where franchisees successfully argued that the company had not done enough to support and promote the brand.

Founded in 1950, Dunkin’ is known for coffee, donuts, breakfast sandwiches and quick service morning items. Its return could create new competition in Canada’s already crowded coffee market, where established chains have built strong customer loyalty.

Retail expert Bruce Winder told The Canadian Press that other coffee chains should be paying attention to Dunkin’s comeback. With Foodtastic’s Canadian restaurant experience and Dunkin’s strong brand recognition, the chain could once again become a familiar name for Canadian coffee drinkers.
