Elon Musk’s recent comments about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have drawn significant attention and support from social media users in India, coinciding with heightened diplomatic tensions between the two nations. Musk, who has been vocal in his critiques of Trudeau, predicted the prime minister’s defeat in the upcoming election, expected to occur by October next year. “He will be gone in the upcoming election,” Musk wrote on X, responding to a user’s plea for Musk’s help in unseating Trudeau.
Musk’s remarks were met with enthusiastic responses from Indian social media users. One user commented, “He (Justin Trudeau) is another woke virus run by Khalistani terrorists. He has no respect anywhere.” Others echoed similar sentiments, with responses such as, “We agree with you,” and, “Cannot wait! Trudeau is a disaster!” adding to the chorus of support. One user, Shubham Chaudhary, expressed hope that Musk’s prediction would come true, writing, “Hope your words turn into reality next year.”
The billionaire’s criticisms of Trudeau are not new. Last year, Musk accused the Trudeau administration of undermining free speech after Canada introduced regulations requiring online streaming services to register for government oversight. Musk called this policy “shameful” and said, “Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada.”
Musk’s comments date back to February 2022, when Trudeau invoked emergency powers for the first time in Canadian history to quell trucker protests over vaccine mandates. Musk compared Trudeau to Adolf Hitler at the time, posting a meme that read, “Stop comparing me to Justin Trudeau. I had a budget.”
These remarks come at a time when Canada-India relations are particularly strained. The diplomatic rift deepened after Canadian leaders linked the Indian government to the assassination of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. India responded by recalling its High Commissioner and highlighting concerns over anti-India activities in Canada.
The Indian community in Canada has faced escalating violence and hostility in recent months, including incidents of temple vandalism and verbal and physical assaults. Musk’s criticism of Trudeau has resonated with many Indians, bolstering his popularity among those who view Trudeau’s government as mishandling Canada’s internal and international challenges.
