A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by Peel Regional Police officers at Toronto Pearson International Airport early Thursday morning, prompting a significant investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. at Terminal 1’s departures area, leading to disruptions and temporary road closures.
According to the SIU, officers were initially called to respond to reports of a man in distress seated inside an SUV near the airport’s Terminal 1. When approached by police, the man reportedly produced a firearm. Three officers discharged their weapons, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed no officers or bystanders were harmed during the encounter.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by screaming, creating chaos among passengers and airport staff during one of the airport’s busiest periods. Despite the intense incident, Peel Police assured the public that there was no further threat, describing it as an isolated event.
Following the shooting, access to Terminal 1 departures was temporarily blocked. Travelers were redirected through Terminal 1’s arrivals level, causing substantial delays and heavy congestion. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) also temporarily closed Highway 409 leading to the terminal as investigators processed the scene.
Airport authorities advised travelers that operations were continuing normally, though recommended alternative arrangements for passengers seeking parking, including parking at Terminal 3 and utilizing the inter-terminal train service. Images from Pearson Airport showed extensive line-ups of vehicles waiting to access the terminal.
The SIU, tasked with investigating incidents involving police actions resulting in death or injury, has taken over the case and will determine if the officers involved acted appropriately.
