Google Maps is adding a powerful new feature designed to make navigation smarter and easier for users. The company has introduced a tool called Ask Maps, which uses Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence system to answer detailed and specific questions while users are planning trips or already traveling. The new feature reflects the growing role artificial intelligence plays in everyday apps and services.

According to Google Maps Vice President Miriam Daniel, the goal of Ask Maps is to help people find exactly what they are looking for without spending time scrolling through reviews, photos, and location details. Instead of manually searching for nearby businesses or services, users can simply ask the app a conversational question and receive relevant suggestions generated through AI analysis.

For example, a user could ask something like where to charge a phone without having to wait in line at a busy café. Someone else might ask whether there is a public tennis court nearby with lights available for nighttime play. The system then scans the vast amount of information already stored in Google Maps including reviews, photos, and location data to provide recommendations that best match the request.

The feature could be especially helpful for road trips. Google says Ask Maps can help travelers plan journeys by suggesting stops, attractions, and restaurants along a route. Someone planning a long drive to a destination such as the Grand Canyon could ask the app to recommend scenic stops, interesting landmarks, or good places to eat along the way.

Google is also improving how navigation looks within the app by introducing a more immersive visual experience. Instead of relying only on traditional flat maps, the upgraded system blends map data with Street View imagery and AI generated modeling. This allows drivers to see three dimensional views of roads, buildings, and surrounding terrain while navigating.

The Ask Maps function appears as a new button inside the Google Maps app and is already rolling out to users in the United States and India on both Android and iOS devices. Google says desktop support will be added in the near future as the feature continues to expand.

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming a major part of navigation and travel tools, and Google believes Ask Maps could make everyday trips simpler and less distracting. By letting the AI sort through large amounts of information instantly, users can focus on the road while still finding exactly what they need during their journey.
