Hudson’s Bay Co. is preparing to launch liquidation sales across its stores, potentially starting this week. Here’s what customers need to know about the process.

When and Where Will the Sales Take Place?

Facing severe financial challenges, Hudson’s Bay has been unable to secure funding to continue normal operations and is now moving toward liquidating its entire chain. Pending court approval, clearance sales will begin soon at all 80 Hudson’s Bay locations across Canada, as well as at three Saks Fifth Avenue and 13 Saks Off Fifth stores.

The company is still exploring potential buyers for parts of the business, meaning some stores may be pulled from the liquidation process if an alternative deal emerges. If the sales proceed as planned, they are expected to last 10 to 12 weeks, ending by June 15.

Will the Online Store Still Operate?

Yes, but only temporarily. The company has announced that TheBay.com will continue operating for a limited time, though it has not provided a specific shutdown date.

Are Hudson’s Bay Gift Cards Still Valid?

For now, yes—but only until April 6. While the retailer stopped selling new gift cards last week, there are still $24.1 million worth of outstanding cards in circulation. Customers can use these gift cards during liquidation sales, but after the April 6 deadline, they will no longer be accepted.

What Happens to Hudson’s Bay Loyalty Points?

Unfortunately, loyalty points are no longer redeemable. As of February 1, the total outstanding value of Hudson’s Bay rewards points stood at $58.6 million, but the program has now been suspended. This means shoppers cannot earn or use points during purchases.

A Legacy That Spans Centuries

Founded in 1670, Hudson’s Bay has been a pillar of Canadian retail for generations. Many Canadians have fond memories of shopping at The Bay, whether it was for wedding registries, seasonal sales, or its signature striped merchandise. As the company faces an uncertain future, its impact on the country’s retail landscape remains significant.
