India has expressed deep sorrow over the recent murders of three Indian students in Canada, describing the incidents as “terrible tragedies” and urging Canadian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. The murders come amidst a backdrop of deteriorating relations between the two nations.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue during a media briefing, noting that Indian missions in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver are in regular contact with Canadian authorities regarding the cases. While details of the crimes were not disclosed, Jaiswal stated, “We are saddened by these terrible tragedies that have struck our nationals in Canada,” and extended condolences to the grieving families.

The safety and welfare of Indian nationals, especially students in Canada, remain a priority for the Indian government. In light of rising hate crimes and violence, India has issued an advisory urging its citizens to exercise extreme caution and vigilance.

Tensions between India and Canada have significantly worsened since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linked Indian government agents to the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey last year. The allegations led to a diplomatic standoff, including the withdrawal of India’s high commissioner and the expulsion of diplomats on both sides.

India has criticized the Trudeau government for allowing Khalistani elements to operate on Canadian soil, accusing such groups of targeting Indian diplomats and interests. Addressing media reports about the denial of Indian visas to pro-Khalistan individuals, Jaiswal dismissed them as “disinformation” aimed at maligning India. He emphasized, “Granting of Indian visas is our sovereign function, and we have the legitimate right to deny visas to those who undermine our territorial integrity.”

As investigations continue, the tragic loss of the three Indian students underscores the pressing need for greater safety measures and stronger bilateral cooperation to address security concerns.
