CHILDREN LEARN FROM READING BOOKS, AND FROM THEIR PARENTS. AN ENGINEER MOM HAS WRITTEN TWO BOOKS TO INSPIRE GIRLS TO ENTER THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION WHEN THEY GROW UP.
When Jeannette Chau was studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto there were very few girls enrolled in this discipline. Statistics inform us that in Canada today, only 14% of professional engineers are female. However, as of late that statistic is changing and more women are entering the Engineering field. She also noticed that many adults aren’t aware of the different types of engineering, which can include for example: electrical, civil, mechanical, aerospace, chemical, and biomedical. She wanted to change all that, so she has written two books, one titled: My Mom is an Electrical Engineer! She is a Superhero! The second book is called: My Mom is a Civil Engineer! She is a Superhero!
“Both books are easy to understand and were written to educate and entertain young girls. My objective in writing the books was to inspire young girls to develop an interest in the Engineering field and to highlight female role models in this discipline. Parents may also learn from these books which describe various types of Engineers. There’s a comparison of Moms to superheroes since both tend to solve problems and they feature real engineer Moms and indicate what type of work they specialize in.”
The books are primarily written for the age group of: four to eight year olds.
Jeannette worked in the telecommunications field when she graduated from Electrical Engineering. She found it to be a very rewarding career and is proud of her years in engineering. She is also the past President of the Mississauga Arts Council and is active in the community.
She hopes her series of books will serve to open young minds to different possibilities as many young girls don’t realize the potential that an engineering career offers. She is also a mother of two children so she understands that Moms can be excellent role models. She also wanted to demonstrate that ordinary people like moms can be engineers, so that girls can see themselves becoming one too. Each book is based on real moms who are real engineers.
Jeannette plans to continue writing to expand her series of Engineer inspired children’s books.
