Mumbai Indians delivered a statement win on Sunday night, overpowering Chennai Super Kings by nine wickets in a lopsided IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium. Powered by dominant half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, MI made light work of CSK’s 177-run target, finishing the chase in just 15.4 overs.

Rohit Sharma, who was named Player of the Match, played a captain’s knock with an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls, smashing six towering sixes and four boundaries. Partnering him in the destruction was Suryakumar Yadav, who remained not out on 68 from just 30 balls, including five sixes and three fours. The duo stitched together a blazing 114-run unbeaten stand for the second wicket, dismantling CSK’s bowling with calculated aggression.

CSK’s bowlers had no answers, with only Ravindra Jadeja managing a breakthrough by dismissing Ryan Rickelton. The rest of the attack, including seasoned campaigners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Noor Ahmad, failed to contain the onslaught as MI cruised to victory with 26 balls remaining.

Earlier, CSK had posted 176/5 thanks to crucial contributions from Shivam Dube (50 off 32) and Ravindra Jadeja (53* off 35), who put together a solid 79-run stand for the fourth wicket. Debutant Ayush Mhatre also impressed with a quickfire 32 off 15 balls, injecting early momentum into CSK’s innings. However, the total proved inadequate on a dew-heavy night where batting second was clearly advantageous.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit acknowledged the support of the Wankhede crowd and spoke about overcoming recent struggles with clarity and balance in his approach. He praised the team’s recent form and expressed hope for continued momentum. Hardik Pandya, MI’s official captain, applauded the bowlers for restricting CSK and lauded the Rohit-SKY partnership that sealed the game.

Suryakumar Yadav also shared his thoughts, crediting Rohit for making his batting easier and highlighting the importance of playing aggressively against spinners like Jadeja. He has now climbed to third in the Orange Cap race, just 35 runs behind leader Nicholas Pooran.

On the other side, MS Dhoni reflected on CSK’s sub-par performance, admitting the score was below par considering the dew factor. He praised Mhatre’s fearless knock and acknowledged the need to rethink combinations if playoff qualification slips out of reach.

With this win, MI climbed to sixth in the points table with 8 points from 8 games. CSK, meanwhile, remained at the bottom with only two wins in eight matches, facing an uphill battle to stay alive in the playoff race.
