Jaguar has officially confirmed that its upcoming high performance electric grand tourer will be called the Type 01, marking the first major model of the brand’s new era. According to Top Gear, the name connects Jaguar’s future focused electric direction with the company’s historic naming tradition used on models such as the C Type, E Type, and F Type.

The Type 01 is expected to arrive as a luxury four door GT with a dramatic design, major performance ambitions, and a full electric powertrain. Jaguar says the “01” portion of the name reflects zero tailpipe emissions while also symbolizing the first vehicle in the brand’s next chapter.

Underneath the design, the Type 01 is expected to use a tri motor electric setup producing more than 986 horsepower and 959 pound feet of torque. Those figures would place the car firmly in super GT territory, giving Jaguar a bold performance statement as it moves away from its previous lineup and into an all electric future.

The car is also expected to feature a 120 kWh battery, 850 volt architecture, and charging speeds of up to 350 kW. Jaguar is targeting more than 400 miles of range, while the vehicle’s battery configuration is said to be unique to the brand. One of its more controversial design details is that it will not include a traditional rear window.

Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover said the Type 01 represents a complete reset for the brand while still drawing inspiration from its past. He described the name as a reflection of Jaguar’s new direction, with the zero representing a brand reset and the one representing the first car of a new chapter.

Prototype versions of the Type 01 are set to appear in Monaco during the Formula E weekend, while the final production model is expected to be revealed later this year. With its bold styling, extreme electric output, and symbolic name, the Jaguar Type 01 is shaping up to be one of the brand’s most important launches in decades.
