Kevin Spacey made a quiet return to the Cannes scene this week, receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Better World Fund at a sparsely attended gala event. The two-time Oscar-winning actor, whose career stalled following allegations of sexual misconduct from more than 30 men, has not appeared at Cannes since 2016—one year before the rise of the #MeToo movement.

The event, held at the Carlton Hotel’s beach club, was separate from the official Cannes Film Festival lineup and lacked the usual red carpet glamour. Photographers voiced frustration over the absence of recognizable names and guests, with many attendees going unrecognized. The atmosphere was subdued, with the dinner serving as more of a soft relaunch than a star-studded comeback.

The Better World Fund, founded by American entrepreneur Ted Turner, focuses on arts-related initiatives with the broader goal of building a more stable and equitable world. Filmmaker Mira Nair, a supporter of the foundation, attended the gala but appeared unaware of Spacey’s involvement until the day before. When asked about his attendance, she offered a neutral response focused on the event as a whole.

Spacey arrived late to the event, drawing a brief wave of attention that toppled a security barrier and caused some chaos near the red carpet. He made a short statement, avoided all further questions, and quickly moved inside without engaging with reporters.

Outside the venue, the only active protest came not from critics of Spacey, but from a lone climate change activist, Ramiro Magalhães, who was there to draw attention to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. He was unaware of who Spacey was, emphasizing how little buzz surrounded the actor’s return.

Spacey’s presence in Cannes is part of a broader effort to promote The Awakening, a low-budget thriller he stars in that is currently being marketed at the Marché du Film. According to the film’s producer and co-star Matt Hookings, the gala appearance served as a form of “guerrilla marketing,” offering Spacey a chance to signal his return to cinema while discreetly promoting his latest project.

As the evening unfolded, Spacey quietly joined guests for the gala dinner, hoping the night would mark the start of a new chapter. But on the sun-drenched promenade of Cannes, his return passed with little public attention, signaling just how much has changed.
