Performance enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as Mercedes‑AMG CLE63 is moving closer to production with an all-new V-8 engine developed specifically with North American buyers in mind. While Mercedes‑Benz has not confirmed an official launch timeline, senior executives have already tested early prototypes and describe the upcoming model as a standout addition to the AMG lineup that will reward patient fans.
According to company leadership, the CLE63 carries particular importance for the North American market, where demand for high-performance V-8 coupes remains strong. Executives expect roughly 95 percent of global CLE63 sales to come from this region, making it one of the few modern AMG models engineered primarily around American customer preferences rather than European regulatory priorities.
At the heart of the upcoming CLE63 will be a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 featuring a flat-plane crankshaft design. This next-generation engine family is engineered to preserve AMG’s signature performance character while meeting stricter emissions requirements. Versions of the powertrain are already scheduled for deployment in upcoming flagship vehicles including the 2027 S-Class as well as refreshed GLE580 and GLS580 SUVs, where output reaches approximately 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. An AMG-tuned version for the CLE63 is expected to deliver even higher performance figures.
Currently, the most powerful CLE model available is the Mercedes‑AMG CLE53, which uses a turbocharged inline-six producing 443 horsepower. While strong in its own right, the CLE63 will represent a clear step above it in both power and driving character once the new V-8 arrives. Industry observers believe the model could become one of AMG’s most important performance coupes in years if the final specifications match expectations from early development testing.
The CLE63 also reflects a broader strategy shift as Mercedes strengthens its product focus on North America. Company leadership has confirmed additional region-specific models are in development on a new platform capable of supporting V-8 powertrains. The move forms part of a wider global rollout of roughly 40 new vehicles across the Mercedes-Benz, AMG, and Maybach portfolios over the next three years, spanning internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles. For longtime AMG enthusiasts, the continued investment in V-8 performance signals that traditional high-output engines will remain part of the brand’s identity for years to come.
