More than 20,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs have been recalled in Canada because of a defect that could cause some vehicles to lose power to the wheels or move while parked if the parking brake is not applied.
According to Global News, Transport Canada said the issue involves the power transfer unit, also known as the PTU, on certain Jeep Cherokee models. The recall applies to some vehicles equipped with a two speed PTU.
The affected models include Jeep Cherokees from the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years. Transport Canada warned that if the PTU becomes damaged and fails, the vehicle may lose drive power or could roll unexpectedly while parked.
Officials said the problem could increase the risk of injury or a crash, particularly if a parked vehicle moves suddenly. Owners of affected vehicles are expected to be notified in writing, although the final repair plan is still being developed.
A similar recall was also issued in the United States last week by Fiat Chrysler, affecting more than 61,000 Cherokee vehicles. U.S. safety officials said a failed PTU could lead to loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway.
