NEW YORK — The NBA issued a stern disciplinary message on Wednesday, handing down a total of 17 games in suspensions following the chaotic “basket-brawl” between the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets earlier this week.
The Breakdown of Penalties
The league’s Executive VP of Basketball Operations, James Jones, announced that four players would face immediate unpaid suspensions.
| Player | Team | Suspension | Reason Cited |
| Isaiah Stewart | Pistons | 7 Games | Leaving the bench; “Repeated history” of misconduct. |
| Miles Bridges | Hornets | 4 Games | Fighting and escalating the altercation. |
| Moussa Diabaté | Hornets | 4 Games | Fighting and escalating the altercation. |
| Jalen Duren | Pistons | 2 Games | Initiating the altercation. |
Anatomy of the Melee
The incident was ignited with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter when Diabaté fouled Duren on a post-up play. The two centers went forehead-to-forehead before Duren shoved Diabaté in the face.
The situation spiraled into a “Malice at the Palace” style scare when Isaiah Stewart sprinted from the Detroit bench to engage Miles Bridges. The confrontation lasted over 30 seconds and briefly required on-court police intervention to separate the players as they tumbled into the stanchion area.
Looking Ahead
Despite the chaos, the Pistons managed a 110-104 victory, maintaining their lead in the Eastern Conference. While Duren will be sidelined for two regular-season games, the NBA has confirmed he will still be allowed to play in this weekend’s 2026 All-Star Game in San Francisco, as the league separates exhibition honors from disciplinary bans.
“We made a choice in that moment and our actions put us in a situation where we have to take the medicine,” Hornets coach Charles Lee said following the announcement. “We have to do better next time.”
