A Brampton, Ontario family is grappling with stress and frustration after their stolen license plate racked up over $400 in parking tickets. Despite reporting the theft to authorities, Priyanka Kashyap has received nine parking tickets from Milton since late May, six of which were issued after she reported the plate missing and replaced it.

On May 24, Priyanka’s brother noticed the front plate missing from her car. Believing it was stolen while parked at a mall, she contacted Peel Regional Police, who advised her to report the plate missing to Service Ontario. Despite this, parking tickets began arriving, leading to confusion and frustration.

Priyanka and her mother, Caroline Novak, faced inconsistent information from police and municipal authorities while disputing the tickets. The police initially dismissed the need for a report, and Service Ontario processed the new plates without flagging the stolen ones effectively.

In June, Priyanka received notices for two overdue tickets. Upon investigating, she found eight tickets tied to her old plate, all issued on the same street in Milton. The town’s bylaw officers, lacking access to the Ministry of Transport’s database, issued tickets without realizing the plate had been reported stolen.

Priyanka’s attempts to resolve the issue were met with demands for a police report. After more back-and-forth, they finally filed a report with Peel police, who involved Halton Regional Police to seize the stolen plates. However, a ninth ticket was issued even after the police report was filed.

Peel police acknowledged the inefficiency of the process, calling for better systems to prevent such issues. Despite the resolution, the family remains frustrated by the ordeal, highlighting the need for more cohesive and efficient protocols.

Priyanka and her family hope that with the police report, the tickets will be dismissed, but the experience has left them questioning the complexity of resolving what should have been a straightforward issue.
