Doug Ford received an honorary doctorate from Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday during the institution’s spring commencement ceremony in Michigan. The Ontario premier was presented with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree and addressed graduating students while wearing academic regalia at the event.

During his remarks, Ford acknowledged that some graduates may have been surprised to see a Canadian political leader speaking at their ceremony. He reflected on his personal and professional ties to the United States, noting that he spent several years working there while helping expand his family’s printing business. He also highlighted what he described as more than two centuries of cooperation between Canada and the United States.

Ford spoke about his career in both business and public life, including his time serving on Toronto City Council alongside his late brother Rob Ford. As he often does during public appearances, the premier also shared his personal contact number with students before shifting his focus to the issue of cross border trade relations.

Addressing tensions between Canada and the United States over tariffs, Ford praised the long standing economic relationship between Ontario and Michigan, particularly in the automotive manufacturing sector. However, he warned that trade disputes have recently strained that partnership. Quoting former U.S. president Ronald Reagan, Ford cautioned that protectionist policies can lead to shrinking markets, business closures, and job losses. He emphasized the importance of restoring cooperative trade ties between the two countries.

The premier concluded his address by encouraging graduates to value teamwork, strong relationships, and loyalty throughout their careers. He said those qualities have contributed to the success of both Canada and the United States and will continue to shape future opportunities for young professionals entering the workforce.

University president George Grant Jr. described Ford as a friend of the institution and thanked him for supporting cross border cooperation across the Great Lakes region. The honour comes as Ford has continued to position himself as a vocal critic of tariffs introduced by Donald Trump and a supporter of closer Canada U.S. economic collaboration.

Ford’s response to recent trade tensions included ordering the removal of American liquor products from shelves operated by the LCBO shortly after tariffs were introduced. He also drew attention during meetings in Ottawa by wearing a Canada Is Not For Sale cap amid political debate surrounding U.S. remarks about annexation. Ontario later introduced a temporary surcharge on electricity exports affecting parts of Michigan, Minnesota, and New York before suspending the measure after one day. Officials said the policy generated about $260,000 while in effect and was expected to impact approximately 1.5 million homes and businesses.

Founded in 1963, Saginaw Valley State University is a public institution located in University Center, Michigan. The Canadian Press first reported on the honorary degree presentation on May 2, 2026.
