Ontario Premier Doug Ford delivered a forceful message on Monday, urging Canadians to unite and push back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed calls for Canada to become the 51st American state. Speaking at the Valuing Reconciliation in Global Markets Conference in Toronto, Ford warned that Trump’s rhetoric and tariffs are creating economic turmoil and threatening Canadian sovereignty.
“Folks, we have two choices here,” Ford said. “We either band together and support each other, or we sit back and get rolled over by President Trump with a cement mixer. That’s option one. Option two, we fight like we’ve never fought before. I choose option two. We will never roll over. We will never, ever be the 51st state. Canada will never be for sale.”
Ford’s remarks came just hours after Trump posted another statement on Truth Social encouraging Canadians to embrace statehood, suggesting that joining the United States would eliminate tariffs, create borderless free trade, and lead to a booming economy. Trump also falsely claimed that America had been subsidizing Canada by “hundreds of billions of dollars a year.”
Throughout the election campaign, Trump’s comments have become a central issue, influencing voter sentiment and rallying Canadian leaders across the political spectrum to defend national sovereignty. Ford, who has been increasingly vocal on American media networks in recent months, reiterated that Trump’s tariffs and annexation talk have destabilized markets and hurt Canadian businesses.
“Nothing is worse than uncertainty,” Ford said. “And right now, there is one person causing this problem.”
As Canadians vote in a fiercely contested federal election today, the battle over the country’s future direction and its relationship with its powerful neighbor to the south has taken on a new urgency.
