South Simcoe Police Service say a 14 year old from York Region has been charged following an investigation into what officers described as a targeted and disturbing series of assaults involving a youth with a disability in Bradford West Gwillimbury.
Police said investigators began reviewing multiple incidents shared on social media platforms, including Snapchat, that allegedly showed the victim being harassed and bullied by a group of youths over several weeks. Authorities noted the case escalated after a video circulated online appearing to show the victim being taken to a secluded location and repeatedly assaulted.
According to police, the accused turned themselves in on Tuesday and has since been charged with multiple counts of assault. Because the suspect is a minor, additional identifying information cannot be released under youth justice protections. The allegations have not been tested in court.
Investigators say the case remains active and further arrests may be possible as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incidents and review additional evidence connected to the videos shared online.
Police are also urging parents and guardians to speak with young people about responsible social media use and the serious legal consequences that can follow bullying and violent behaviour. Credit: The Canadian Press.
