April marks National Oral Health Month in Canada, and one Ottawa-based dentist is using the occasion to emphasize a message that often gets overlooked—your mouth is the gateway to your overall well-being. Dr. Jessie Mcallister of Mcallister Dentistry is reminding Canadians that regular dental checkups are about much more than just clean teeth; they’re a vital part of staying healthy overall.
“Oral health is directly connected to our overall health, so we want to remind people to take care of their teeth as part of taking care of their whole body,” Mcallister shared in an interview with CTV Morning Live. She explained that visits to the dentist can be comfortable and stress-free, with her clinic offering blankets, neck pillows, wireless headphones, and even movies to help patients relax. These thoughtful touches are designed to ease dental anxiety and encourage more people to book regular appointments.
Skipping dental visits, Mcallister warned, can lead to bigger problems down the line. A routine screening at the dentist’s office can detect more than just cavities—it can offer insights into broader health concerns. From early signs of oral cancer and jaw issues (TMJ) to checking for lip and tongue ties, dentists often serve as the first line of defense in catching issues before they worsen. “Inflammation from gum disease, for example, doesn’t just stay in your mouth—it can impact your entire body,” she noted.
According to Mcallister, one of the most common areas where people fall short is consistent flossing and brushing. She strongly recommends switching to an electric toothbrush, citing that it can remove up to 20 times more plaque than a traditional one. For those who find string floss uncomfortable, she also suggests incorporating a water flosser into their routine. “It’s a great way to flush out plaque and bacteria, especially for those who struggle with regular flossing,” she said.
National Oral Health Month is a time when dental professionals across Canada aim to raise awareness about the importance of daily dental care and preventive practices. Dr. Mcallister’s message is clear: taking care of your mouth is one of the most important steps you can take toward maintaining your overall health.
