Thousands of speeding tickets in Mississauga were scrapped last year after a Canada Post strike disrupted the mailing process, city officials confirmed. The strike, which lasted from November 15 to December 17, 2024, directly impacted the timely issuance of over 4,000 automated speed enforcement (ASE) charges.

According to the City of Mississauga, a total of 4,087 ASE violations could not be processed within the required legal timeframe and were therefore dismissed. “Provincial regulations mandate that speeding tickets must be mailed within 23 days of the offence,” city spokesperson Irene McCutcheon told INsauga.com.

Each month, Mississauga’s speed cameras capture an average of 5,000 traffic violations. However, the postal service disruption significantly affected the city’s ability to retrieve, review, and process the photographic evidence needed to issue tickets on time.

“The labour disruption more heavily impacted offences that occurred before or during the early stages of the strike,” the City noted. “Those violations could not be mailed within the required window and were ultimately not issued.”

In contrast, tickets for violations that took place near the end of the strike period were still processed successfully, as mailing operations resumed in time to meet the 23-day deadline.
