CACP and Motorola Solutions Recognize PRP and the Peel Autism Collaborative with the CSWB Award
Region of Peel – On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Motorola Solutions honoured Peel Regional Police (PRP) and the Peel Autism Collaborative (PAC) with the Award of Excellence in Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB). The award recognizes the Service’s outstanding efforts to support and achieve the best outcomes for autistic individuals in the Peel Region.
“Achieving our goal to become the most progressive, innovative, and inclusive police service requires focused awareness of the diverse needs of our communities,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Peel Regional Police. “We’re grateful and proud of our partnership with the Peel Autism Collaborative as our collaboration not only deepened our understanding of autism but led us to pioneer a strategy to serve our community better, leading the way for Canadian law enforcement.”
In 2023, Peel Regional Police’s Community Safety and Well-Being Bureau formed a partnership with the Peel Autism Collaborative dedicated to understanding and better serving the needs of those living with autism. Through this collaboration, a service-wide strategy was operationalized in May 2023 , which resulted in new specialized training measures and resources for frontline officers to better respond to the needs of Peel Region’s autistic community.
Experts estimate that 1-2% of the population in Canada is living with autism, and as many as 400,000 to 800,000 Canadians are on the spectrum. PRP continues to focus on creating opportunities and building connections with Peel Region’s autistic community, families, and experts to gain insights and strengthen service delivery.
