Peel Regional Police Partners with Alzheimer’s Society of Peel for “Project Lantern”

Region of Peel   – Peel Regional Police (PRP) and the Alzheimer’s Society of Peel (ASP) have established the most unique partnership between a police service and Alzheimer’s Society in Canada.  Dubbed “Project Lantern,” this partnership will see a more cohesive approach to dealing with vulnerable seniors living with Alzheimer’s and dementia- including increased services for families and greater use of the Vulnerable Persons Registry.

“Building a safer community together involves new approaches to keep our vulnerable senior population safe in Peel.  This partnership will ensure that policing and mental health best practices are working in tandem along with technology to ensure those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia are protected and supported.  This is a forward-thinking approach that builds a safer community together and one Peel Regional Police is proud to be a part of.”- Chief Nishan Duraiappah, Peel Regional Police.

In the Region of Peel, nearly 35,000 people have dementia, and nearly 22,000 of them have Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Society says that 60% of people with dementia will get lost at some point. If they are missing for over 24 hours, 50% of this vulerable population will be found injured or dead.

Project Lantern will involve members from the Divisional Mobilization Unit (DMU) working with those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia and their families to identify risks, discuss safeguarding information and encourage their participation in the Vulnerable Persons Registry- an online portal that contains select personal and medical information that can assist in locating a missing vulnerable senior.  DMU, with the consent of the senior and/or their families, will also involve ASP to provide further community resources to decrease instances of missing vulnerable individuals, such as after-care strategies.

Peel Regional Police encourages families of those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia to enroll in the Vulnerable Person Registry to help contribute to their loved one’s safety and well-being.  Link: Vulnerable Persons Registry – Peel Regional Police (peelpolice.ca)
