Region of Peel, June 28- Peel Regional Police held a press conference to unveil the ‘Our Way Forward’ strategy. This strategy builds on many significant steps Peel Police has taken to adopt Ontario’s Community Safety and Well-Being framework as a foundation for serving our communities and operating as a progressive, innovative, inclusive public safety organization.
“The Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) framework is based on the idea that it is critical to focus more of our efforts ‘upstream’ to proactively identify and address issues that impact safety and well-being instead of concentrating downstream after an incident requiring police or other crisis-based services has already occurred,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah.
The ‘Our Way Forward’ strategy focuses on ways Peel Police will continue to transition towards approaches that are more proactive, collaborative and focused on preventing and mitigating risks to the safety and well-being of our residents and communities.
Peel Police has been integrating a CSWB lens within its internal operations and looking at various issues differently; identifying the root cause of specific calls for service and ensuring that people who are fundamentally in need of help receive the right services at the right time. This strategy recognizes that officers are called to many situations with less to do with crime and public emergencies and more with complex social issues that cannot be resolved in isolation by police.
To do this and achieve the commitments Peel Police are making in ‘Our Way Forward’, Peel Police is putting partnerships at the centre of everything they do and working in a way that is evidence-based, data-driven and responsive to Peel’s diverse communities. Peel Police is adopting a more balanced and collaborative approach to achieving public safety and recognizing that communities are best served when working in conjunction with our partners in a more coordinated and integrated manner.
Our Way Forward is a living document intended to evolve in response to emerging issues and trends within Peel in dialogue with our partners and the communities we serve.
