Halifax police have concluded their investigation into the death of 19-year-old Indian-origin woman Gursimran Kaur, who was found deceased in a walk-in oven at a Walmart bakery department on October 19. Authorities stated that after a thorough inquiry, the death was determined to be “not suspicious,” with no evidence pointing to foul play.
The investigation included numerous interviews and a review of video footage from the store. Public Information Officer Martin Cromwell noted, “Our investigation has not led us to suspect foul play. We do not believe anyone else was involved. We acknowledge the public’s interest in this case, but there are questions that can never be answered.”
Ms. Kaur had been working at Walmart alongside her mother for the past two years, while her father and brother remain in India. Reports suggest she was found in the oven by her mother, sparking widespread speculation and concerns among the public and co-workers.
Viral social media posts, including a TikTok video by co-worker Chris Breezie, highlighted how the oven operates. Breezie demonstrated that the oven could be activated from the outside and explained that the handle was difficult to open. She also noted an emergency latch inside the appliance and stated that no job at the bakery required an employee to enter the oven.
Another employee, Mary, expressed confusion, saying, “It doesn’t make any sense… You have to push it, hear the click [for the door to close].” She emphasized that the ovens were designed with safety measures to prevent such incidents.
While the investigation ruled out any criminal involvement, many questions remain unanswered, leaving colleagues and the public struggling to comprehend the circumstances of this tragic incident.
