Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church, was laid to rest on Saturday following an emotional funeral that drew over 250,000 mourners to Rome. The beloved pontiff, who passed away at the age of 88, was buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major—making history as the first pope in more than a century to be interred outside the Vatican. His modest burial honored the values he championed during his life, especially his commitment to serving the poor and marginalized.
The funeral began with a solemn mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, followed by a four-mile procession through the heart of Rome. Crowds lined the streets, applauding and at times reaching out as the simple wooden coffin carrying Pope Francis passed by. The private entombment ceremony, led by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, concluded at the Basilica, with senior cardinals and members of Francis’ family in attendance. The Vatican press office confirmed the rites were completed by early afternoon.
World leaders and dignitaries gathered to pay their respects, including former U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who departed Rome shortly after the funeral concluded. Earlier, President Trump met briefly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before attending the burial proceedings. The funeral highlighted Francis’ global influence and the lasting bonds he forged across nations and communities during his twelve-year papacy.
Personal tributes also surfaced during the day’s ceremonies. Valerie Herrera, who first met Pope Francis during a historic 2015 virtual town hall event with American students, shared her memories of how the pope’s kindness had impacted her life. Reflecting on their encounter, Herrera, now a nurse, credited Francis with inspiring her to lead a life of compassion and service to others. Stories like hers illustrated the personal, lasting mark Francis left on individuals around the world.
Pope Francis’ devotion to the Salus Populi Romani icon in the adjacent chapel was also remembered, as it was his tradition to pray there before and after each foreign journey. The massive turnout, emotional tributes, and final journey through Rome underscored the immense love and admiration Francis inspired during his lifetime. His burial at Santa Maria Maggiore symbolized a papacy grounded in humility, humanity, and enduring faith.
