Prime Minister Mark Carney will officially be sworn in and unveil his first cabinet on Tuesday at Rideau Hall, according to a confirmation from the Governor General’s office. The ceremony, led by Governor General Mary Simon, is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT and will take place inside the historic ballroom, located just steps from Carney’s new residence at Rideau Cottage.
This highly anticipated event will introduce Canadians to the team Carney has chosen to implement his campaign platform and take charge of critical national issues. A strong advocate for gender parity, Carney is expected to maintain a balanced cabinet, though questions remain about whether he will expand the number of ministers beyond his pre-election lineup.
Political circles in Ottawa are abuzz with speculation over potential appointments, particularly regarding new Liberal MPs, high-profile recruits, and whether any former ministers from Justin Trudeau’s government will retain their posts or be moved aside. There’s also interest in whether Carney will keep intact the inner circle that accompanied him during his initial diplomatic meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Last week, Carney reaffirmed his vision for a lean and efficient front bench. “I committed to an efficient cabinet, a focused cabinet,” he told reporters in Ottawa.
Once sworn in, cabinet ministers will have two weeks to hire staff, review their portfolios, and begin shaping their legislative and policy agendas before Parliament reconvenes.
