Following the sudden passing of businessman Sunjay Kapur at age 53 during a polo match in London, an old interview with his wife, Priya Sachdev, has resurfaced, shedding light on his life post-divorce and the challenges he faced after the death of his father, industrialist Surinder Kapur.
In a 2015 interview on the YouTube channel Kin and Kindness, Priya opened up about her bond with Sunjay, describing him as a “misunderstood” man who carried the weight of personal and professional turmoil with grace. When they began their relationship, Sunjay was navigating the loss of his father while stepping into leadership of the family’s Germany-based business operations.
Priya revealed that she played an active role in his business life, frequently discussing strategy and helping manage the family office. Together, they made key investment decisions, with Priya emphasizing how involved she became in both Sunjay’s world and legacy.
Reflecting on his journey, she spoke of how Sunjay had to quickly mature in the wake of loss and a public divorce from Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor. Despite those difficult years, Priya praised him for ultimately earning respect within the business community and for building upon the legacy of his father, a key figure in India’s auto components industry.
She also recalled Sunjay’s deep love for polo, a passion that became central to their family’s lifestyle. Every year, they would move to England for part of the polo season so that he could continue competing professionally, a sport he remained devoted to until his last day.
Sunjay and Karisma Kapoor were married for 13 years before divorcing in 2016. The couple share two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Sunjay later married Priya Sachdev in 2017, and they welcomed their son, Azarias, in 2018. Priya also has a daughter from a previous marriage.
As tributes pour in following Sunjay’s untimely death, Priya’s words paint a portrait of a man who, though often misunderstood, faced adversity head-on and left behind a meaningful legacy.
