Public Advisory: Telephone Scams Using Toronto Police Phone Numbers

The Toronto Police Service is warning the public about scammers who are using spoofed Toronto Police Service phone numbers and targeting members of the public.
It is reported that:
members of the public are receiving phone calls that appear to be coming from a Toronto Police Service phone number
the caller will address victims by their first name
the caller then claims to be a member of the Toronto Police Service, who is investigating a ongoing fraudulent scam
at this time, the victims have identified this call as a scam and have hung up right away
Please remember: the Toronto Police Service will never contact you by telephone and make any demands for payment of any kind
Fraud Prevention
As a reminder to the public:
do not provide any personal information or banking details to anyone over the phone
do not provide any copies of your passport or other identification
do not transfer funds overseas, including cryptocurrency, in response to demands made over the phone
if you have provided personal information or banking details to anyone, it is advised to contact a credit agency, TransUnion Canada and/or Equifax and have your accounts monitored
