Toronto: Indigenous & non-profit partners will run 260 affordable rental homes in Toronto under the Rapid Housing Initiative, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has announced. These are St. Felix Centre, Wood Green, Canadian Helen Keller Centre,St. Clare’s Multifaith #Housing Society, Akwa Honsta Non-Profit Aboriginal Homes and Wigwamen.
CHKC said in a tweet that it had received funding to build a 56-unit affordable & fully accessible apartment building in the neighbourhood of Etobicoke for people who are deafblind and that more information will come in the following weeks.
St Felix Centre announced that it will soon begin redevelopment of their 25 Augusta site to provide new deeply affordable & supportive housing
The new units will support women & women with children experiencing homelessness & intimate partner violence. The building will be located behind our existing transitional home for women & will be a perfect natural extension of our Respite & Transitional Home programs.
W/ this exciting project now in full motion, our Centre achieves the dream of being part of the true solution to homelessness in our city, providing supportive affordable housing, while continuing the legacy of the Felician Sisters of North America of “go where you are needed” & supporting women.
As the redevelopment process progresses, “we will inform our guests & community of the steps we will take to continue supporting people through our Community Meals Program while construction takes place. We will not leave people experiencing #food insecurity alone.”
Meanwhile, the City of Toronto itself has said The City is creating a new supply of housing, including affordable and supportive homes, to meet the varying needs of Toronto residents.
The HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan provides a blueprint for action across the full housing spectrum – from homelessness to rental and ownership housing to long-term care for seniors. This new plan was created following a comprehensive public and stakeholder consultation and sets an aggressive housing agenda focused on supporting people over the next 10 years.
