Royal Challengers Bengaluru suffered a catastrophic collapse in Lucknow, losing their final seven wickets for just 16 runs in a defeat that could cost them a top-two finish in the IPL standings. The 42-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad dents their net run rate severely, now dropping below Punjab Kings’. With Gujarat Titans still leading the table and Punjab holding a game in hand, RCB’s campaign faces an unexpected roadblock at a critical juncture.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, often underestimated this season, demonstrated the depth of their core for future campaigns. Ishan Kishan, who had struggled since his opening century, returned to form in stunning fashion. His unbeaten 94 off 48 balls anchored Hyderabad’s massive total of 231. Though he lacked consistent support at the other end during the death overs, Kishan managed to score 54 of the final 86 runs, showcasing his ability to finish under pressure.

RCB’s chase began with promise as Phil Salt and Virat Kohli raced to 72 without loss in the first six overs. However, the tide turned when debutant Harsh Dubey dismissed Kohli, followed by a flurry of wickets that saw Salt, Patidar, Jitesh, Shepherd, and David all fall in quick succession. Eshan Malinga’s pinpoint yorkers and clever variations, coupled with a brilliant run-out of Patidar, dismantled RCB’s middle and lower order.

Despite the advantage of SRH being penalized for a slow over-rate—forcing only four fielders outside the circle in the final overs—RCB had no firepower left to exploit the fielding restrictions. Tim David, battling a visible hamstring issue, could not contribute meaningfully in the end, further sealing RCB’s fate.

This victory not only boosts Hyderabad’s morale as they build toward next season, but also dramatically tightens the race at the top of the table. For RCB, it’s a bitter pill to swallow as they now face must-win scenarios and must hope other results go their way if they want a chance at a playoff advantage.
