Today, Dr. Ruby Dhalla has officially entered the race to become Canada’s next Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party by filing the necessary papers. Dhalla made history as the first Indian-origin woman to be elected as a member of Parliament three times and is now aiming to become the first Indo-Canadian Prime Minister.
Speaking about filing her papers, she said: “When my mother came to Canada in 1972, she never imagined that her daughter would one day be in the running to become Prime Minister of Canada. Having dedicated most of my life to public service, I am deeply passionate about my party and my country.”
I look forward to standing up for Canadians and fighting for Canada. As leader, I will put the party back in the hands of the members and bring it back to the centre with practical solutions to the challenges Canadians face.
If you want real change from a leader who is not tied to the current administration and who has the ability to shake up the system, join the Liberal Party and join me. As Prime Minister, I will implement a growth and prosperity agenda to ensure Canadians and Canada succeed at home and globally. Canada’s comeback starts now.”
Dhalla was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was previously elected in the riding of Brampton, Ontario. She is a self-made businesswoman and entrepreneur, recently awarded the Female Hotelier of the Year award. She is also a Doctor of Chiropractic.
Under the Liberal Party’s election rules, any Canadian citizen over the age of 14 can register to vote before January 27. The next leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada will be announced on March 9.
